Japan banks offers great services to its customers. However, for foreigners living in Japan, it might be a little confusing at first. In this article, we will try to provide the basic “need-to-know” about japan banking.

Japan banks operate from 9 AM to 3 PM, Monday to Friday and the ATM (Automated Teller Machine) services on most banks closes at 7 PM on weekdays and 5 PM on weekends and holidays. Yes, ATM services in Japan do not operate 24 hours.  If you use the ATM service beyond the close time, certain fees may apply.

Opening a Bank Account

Opening a bank account in Japan is a must especially if you are planning to live in Japan. The process is a little strict and confusing especially for foreigners. One of the reasons is the requirements that the bank needs for each applicant, which includes an interview from the bank representative.

To prevent money laundering, most banks are strict when a foreigner is only applying alone, without any guarantor.

If you are living in Japan and currently employed, you can ask assistance from your employer to help you apply for a bank account. Your employer may act as your guarantor on behalf of your application.

Requirements for your bank application includes: Residence card and personal seal.

ATM Withdrawals

Step #1

On the ATM, press the language option on the screen.
Select “English”

Step #2

For ATM card issued in Japan. Select “Card Issued in Japan”

Step #3

Select your transaction, for this case “Withdrawals”


Step #4

Insert your ATM card.

Step #5

For withdrawals, select “Bank Card Service”

Step #6

Enter you ATM card PIN.

Step #7

Enter the amount that you wish to withdraw from your account.



Step #8

Get your cash and transaction receipt to complete your transaction.

Check ATM account Balance

Step #1

On the ATM, press the language option on the screen. Select “English”

For ATM card issued in Japan. Select “Card Issued in Japan”

Select your transaction, for this case “Balance Inquiry”

Step #4

Insert your ATM card.

Step #5

For balance inquiries, select “Bank Card Service”

Step #6

Enter you ATM card PIN.

Step #7

View and Check your ATM account balance.
