Japan’s total number of infected cases from the corona virus surpassed 50,000 mark on Aug. 11. The first confirmed COVID-19 case in Japan came on Jan. 16. Japan exceeded 10,000 cases by April 18, excluding the cases of passengers and crew of the Diamond Princess cruise ship.

Tokyo’s case total has spiked beyond 16,000, while other major urban prefectures, such as Osaka, Kanagawa, Aichi and Fukuoka, have seen their totals enter the range of 3,000 to 6,000 cases.

The Tokyo metropolitan government reported 197 new cases of the novel coronavirus, down from the 331 infections the previous day, while Osaka Prefecture confirmed 123 cases compared to 195 Sunday. Average daily new infections over the last seven days stood at 335.9, according to the city government.

Tokyo reported daily infections of more than 300 for a fourth straight day on Sunday.  The government has requested residents to refrain from traveling or returning to their hometowns for the holiday season to further prevent spreading the virus.
