Heian Jingu Setsubun is one of the best-known Setsubun festivals in Kyoto – a great place to drive away evil spirits and welcoming in the new spring season. At 11pm, priests begin the day with a cleansing ritual, followed by an exorcism performance featuring people dressed as Oni terrifying the crowds before being they are banished with beans and chased out of the gates. The day ends with a fire ritual at 4pm and is one of the most impressive in the city.
