Kamihinokinai Paper Balloon Festival dates back from the Edo period where people light up and launch paper balloons in the winter night sky to pray for good harvest and good health. Paper balloons measuring from 8 meters to 12 meters are painted in with various designs and some smaller balloons are written with wishes.

The balloon launch starts exactly at 6:00PM for the big balloons followed by a count down before releasing the balloons all at once. The smaller balloons are released one at a time after the initial launch.

The festival is celebrated on February 10 of every year and has become one of the most extraordinary sights in Japan.
