The next Nozawa Onsen Fire Festival will be held on January 15, 2021. It is held on the same date every year. The Nozawa Fire Festival is considered as one of the three greatest fire festivals in Japan and a must-see event which takes place at Baba-no-hara, Nozawa Onsen Village.
During this festival, 42 and 25 year old men take on special roles as defenders of a massive wooden Shinto shrine which they personally built from local mountain timber. Every year it takes 100 villagers to build the shrine. The entire battles lasts up to 4 hours, and those in attendance are treated to sake compliments of the local village.
