Naha Grand Tsunagiri (那覇大綱挽) is Okinawa’s largest traditional cultural event with a long history that inherits the traditions of the Naha Shichomachi Tsuna from the Ryukyu Kingdom. The origin is said to be around 1450 AD. While the tug-of-war as a local rural event originates from rain-growing for rice farming, rich harvests, and wish wishes, it is a major ruler that symbolizes the trading city Naha as a tug of town.
Since then, it has been flourishing year by year, and since 1995 it was recognized as the “世界一のわら綱” / “Best Straw Rope in the World” by the Guinness Book of Books. It has become established as Okinawa’s largest traditional event that greatly contributes to promotion.
