


Games of the XXXII Olympiad or popularly known as the 2020 Summer Olympics or Tokyo 2020 is now fast approaching. For the first time since 1964, Tokyo will be hosting the 2020 Summer Olympic Games again with one of the core concepts is “UNITY IN DIVERSITY”. 2020 Olympic Games will be held on July 24, 2020, to August 9, 2020, while the 2020 Paralympic Games will be held on August 25, 2020, to September 6, 2020.
Before Tokyo 2020 starts, here are some of the things that you need to know about it.
TOKYO HOSTED THE SUMMER OLYMPICS FOR THE SECOND TIME

By hosting the 2020 Summer Olympics, Japan now is the third-most frequent Olympic host country with four in the history, following France with six and United Stated with nine. The other three Olympics that Japan hosted were the 1964 Summer Olympics (Tokyo), the 1972 Winter Olympics (Sapporo), and the 1998 Winter Olympics (Nagano). Tokyo beat Istanbul and Madrid, two big cities in Europe in bidding for the 2020 Summer Olympics.

Tokyo 2020 Emblems
Winning emblem designs for 2020 Olympic beating 14,599 entries. The designer of these designs is Asao Tokolo.
There are three different rectangular shapes which represent “diversity”. If you will count the number of rectangular shapes if the two emblems, they equal counts, and this represents that “we are all equal”.

MASCOTS



Tokyo 2020 Mascots
Winning mascot design for 2020 Olympics beating more than 2,042 entries. The creator of these designs is Ryo Taniguchi.






MIRAITOWA is the official mascot for the 2020 Olympic Games. Its design is same as the rectangular patterns and color in the official emblem seen on its body and head. The mascot is a combination of the old and the new representing “innovation from harmony”. Miraitowa came from the Japanese words “Miria” and “Towa” which mean, future and eternity respectively.
SOMEITY is the official mascot for 2020 Paralympic Games. Its design has cherry blossom petals which are Japan’s national flower. It also has the same rectangular pattern from the official patter but in a different color. Someity came from the Japanese word “Someiyoshino” which is a popular cherry blossom variety combined with the phrase “so mighty”.

MEDALS



Tokyo 2020 Official Medals
Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee launched a project which is the medal project. The aim of this project is to collect mobile phones and other small devices in order to their metal elements. This metal elements will be used to make the gold, silver and bronze medals for the Olympics. Therefore, the Tokyo 2020 Medals will be made from recycled materials like mobile devices and other small devices. Isn’t that cool?

SPORTS



Sports Icons
Tokyo 2020 Games will consist of 55 sports. 33 different sports will be for Olympic Games and 22 different sports will be for Paralympic Games. Baseball and Softball sport will make a comeback in the 2020 Olympic Games. Some games also will make their debut, Skateboarding, karate, skateboarding, sports climbing, and surfing has been added on the Olympic Games, while Badminton and Taekwondo have been added on the Paralympic Games for Tokyo 2020.
